Here is the big news upfront from the County News Release below:
The Ice Rink is prepared to be open at 11a.m. on Monday for Noon-Time skating, registering for lessons, pass sales, and all other regular season operations.
Los Alamos, NM - County officials announced today that West Road will re-open from Diamond Drive to the County Ice Rink on Monday, November 28th instead of the projected opening date of December 1. The earlier opening date is the result of coordination and quick response efforts by LANL, County Pavement and Utilities’ crews since mid-October.
The watershed above the Los Alamos Reservoir near Pajarito Ski Resort was badly burned in the Las Conchas wildfire in June, increasing run off into the canyon that subsequently caused severe erosion damage to West Road and the surrounding area. The road is owned by the DOE. Until the threat of monsoons passed in October and road repairs could get underway, the roadway as well as the Ice Rink has remained closed. Crews concentrated on repairing the portion of the road leading from Diamond Drive to the Ice Rink to expedite opening that facility. However, the road west of the Ice Rink to the ski hill bypass and NM 501will remain closed until next spring, when additional repair work will be needed. Residents and visitors should continue to pass through the security check points on East Jemez Road in order to access Camp May and the Pajarito Ski Resort.
The West Road project required careful coordination and cooperation between the LANL crews and County crews. LANL crews constructed protective gabions to funnel stormwater safely past the Ice Rink in the channel on the south side of West Road. Gabions are rock-filled wire baskets that can be installed to slow run off and debris to prevent further erosion of the streambed. County crews were responsible for removing jersey barriers and a dirt wall that had been erected as a protective measure around the Ice Rink facility this summer. The dirt shoulder of West Road was severely eroded by stormwater flows, and had to be rebuilt by LANL crews. In the last few weeks, County Pavement and Utilities crews have worked to replace a culvert and gas line at the west entrance to the parking lot. The culvert was removed to allow stormwater to flow freely past the Ice Rink and avoid debris capture. A 2-inch gas line located under the culvert was inadvertently damaged last summer during implementation of the preventative measures being taken to protect the Ice Rink. The line had been capped until permanent repairs could be made last month. Crews also lowered the line to a safe depth below the culvert.
County Recreation staff began re-opening operations in mid-November and installation of the ice sheet is complete and ready for the new opening date. The Rink is prepared to be open at 11a.m. on Monday for Noon-Time skating, registering for lessons, pass sales, and all other regular season operations.
